The Pfister Hotel Announces Extensive Renovations
Already Milwaukee’s premier downtown hotel, The Pfister Hotel’s multi-faceted plan will marry timeless elegance with the utmost in distinctive style and sophistication Milwaukee, July 25, 2023 — The Pfister Hotel, a historic AAA Four Diamond hotel owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, today announced that it is undergoing an extensive, state-of-the-art, multi-phase renovation to further elevate its renowned exceptional guest experience. The renovation, which began in June and is expected to cost approximately $20 million, will feature a full revitalization of the ballrooms and meeting spaces, followed by all-new guest rooms in its historic tower, and conclude with enhancements to the hotel’s iconic lobby, lobby bar, and Café at the Pfister. All phases of this renovation are expected to be completed by spring 2024, with the newly renovated Imperial Ballroom hosting its first wedding this past weekend “Celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, The Pfister is the crown jewel of Milwaukee” said Michael Evans, president of Marcus Hotels & Resorts. “For generations, The Pfister has been the hotel of choice for presidents, poets, performers and hall of famers. It has served as the trusted backdrop to red-carpet events, history-making announcements, as well as countless galas, weddings, meetings, reunions and more. With these renovations, we are blending our celebrated history and traditions with contemporary refinements, fresh aesthetics and enhanced amenities that will result in The Pfister’s continuation as a Milwaukee and national icon for generations to come.” Stately Ballrooms and Event Spaces The first phase of renovations has begun on the seventh floor in The Pfister’s stately meeting and event spaces. The beautiful Imperial Ballroom and King’s Row gave guests their first look at the complete redesign this weekend, with The Grand Ballroom and the Hall of Presidents to follow soon. As the most celebrated ballrooms in Milwaukee, these spaces are home to the start of countless marriages, where Milwaukee’s top charities raise millions in vitally needed funds, and where thousands of small to Fortune 100 companies meet to learn and celebrate.
Renderings of The Pfister Hotel’s Grand Ballroom
Utilizing a new and refined color palette, nearly every element of the seventh-floor meeting and event spaces will include luxurious wallcoverings, custom Axminster wool carpet, tailored drapery and historic fixtures for a new appealing look that honors the hotel’s historic roots. As added comfort, all restrooms are being renovated, along with an expanded women’s restroom and the construction of a new unisex restroom. As host to hundreds of events per year that can accommodate 50 to 1,500 guests, the seventh-floor spaces will feature state-of-the-art technology to enhance the total event experience, including high-performance audio equipment that delivers superior sound as well as top-of-the-line lighting to match any ambiance, day or evening. Each space can be subdivided into smaller spaces to fit guests’ specific needs, with updated climate controls, private entrances for special guests, updated WiFi and conferencing capabilities, and more. Continuing to honor its deep history in Milwaukee, the Pfister’s seventh floor renovations will also incorporate many elements of its storied past into the redesign, starting with its famous distinctive features. The Imperial Ballroom’s original gold-plated chandeliers have been refurbished to ensure they continue to gleam as they have for more than 130 years, and its stunning gilded ceiling retained its original detail following a restorative cleaning, while the Grand Ballroom’s exquisite crystal chandeliers will continue to shimmer over its guests. Key pieces of the hotel’s legacy Victorian art collection, including originals such as “Reverie” by Consuelo Fould, “Dorothy Vernon” by Louis Emile Adan and “Friends” by Pietro Scadrone, will continue to adorn the seventh floor. And when sitting down to a delectable meal, guests will dine on custom gold-plated fine china, designed to replicate the historic fine china once served at The Pfister Hotel many years ago. In addition to the ballrooms and meeting spaces, the pre-function area on the seventh floor will complement the renovations with added functional nuances. For example, the seventh-floor bar will feature stone and woodwork details with a moveable wall to transition from daytime to nighttime events. This innovative design will allow for customized experiences, including an elevated full coffee presentation for morning events and a fully stocked bar for the evening. The gathering space will also include additional seating with pieces intentionally designed for aesthetics as well as to foster discussion and collaboration among event attendees. Behind the scenes, The Pfister’s renovations will include enhancements to its professional catering services, including top-of-the-line commercial appliances utilized by only the finest dining establishments. Already known for its exceptional event offerings, these enhanced culinary capabilities will elevate the restaurant-quality meals and excellent service found at every event. “For over a century, The Pfister has been our city’s enduring mainstay, holding as much of Milwaukee’s history as its own,” said Brandon Drusch, managing director of The Pfister Hotel. “For generations, the Pfister has been the hotel of choice for event planners and individual guests alike. And thanks to thoughtful planning, impeccable attention to detail, and expert craftsmanship, we are elevating our time-honored luxury in a way that is approachable and fresh for today’s guest.” Historic Tower Guest Rooms and Lobby Following the completion of the seventh-floor renovations in early Fall 2023, the hotel will begin extensive renovations to the guest rooms in the hotel’s historic tower. The historic guest rooms will be restyled with today’s discerning traveler in mind and include custom designed carpet, new luxurious furnishings, updated drapery and window treatments, select new bar areas for entertaining, entirely new bathrooms with updated lighting fixtures, tile showers, mirrors with built in lighting, and more. Renovations to the lobby and first-floor public spaces will begin in early 2024 and will include new carpet, new luxurious furnishings, and updated color palettes to complement the iconic domed ceiling. More information about these phases will be forthcoming. In the interim, renderings for The Pfister renovation can be found here. The Pfister’s Storied History For 130 years, The Pfister Hotel has stood as an icon of prestige, history and timeless excellence in Milwaukee. Originally the vision of businessman Guido Pfister and his son, Charles, the Romanesque Revival design and its groundbreaking innovations, such as fireproofing, electricity throughout the hotel and individual thermostat controls in every room, made it a true marvel in 1893. Many called it the “Grand Hotel of the West” as it was the most lavish hotel of its time, costing nearly $1 million to build. In 1962, Ben Marcus purchased the hotel at auction with the intent of renovating the historic hotel back to its original beauty. Since then, the Pfister Hotel has and continues to host the world’s most recognized entertainers, athletes and dignitaries, including every U.S. President since William McKinley. In fact, the Pfister even served as John F. Kennedy’s election headquarters in 1960. The Pfister Hotel also boasts the most celebrated ballrooms in the city with hundreds of galas and special events taking place every year that raise at least $10 million annually. Longstanding Dedication to the Arts Woven throughout the cultural fiber of The Pfister Hotel is a longstanding passion for the arts. The hotel holds the largest Victorian art collection of any other hotel in the world. Originally collected by Guido and Charles Pfister, the expansive collection can be found on every floor throughout the hotel. The Pfister Hotel also celebrates the arts with its internationally recognized Artist in Residence program. In its 14th year, the program selects an artist for a year-long residency where they work in the hotel’s working studio and gallery space that is open to hotel guests and visitors. The public is encouraged to interact with the artist and witness the evolution of their art firsthand, inviting collaboration and intimate experiences with artists and their works. |

Multi-Million Dollar Renovations are Underway at Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center
Enhancements to Iowa’s first Hyatt Regency bring a first-of-its-kind experience, blending best-in-class service and sophisticated cultural style with local flavor. A multimillion-dollar transformation is underway at Iowa’s only Hyatt Regency, with a planned completion by late summer 2023. Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center’s renovation features a complete makeover of the guest rooms and a reimagined and highly curated food and beverage experience—all designed to deliver a market-leading hospitality experience. Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center sits at the heart of the dynamic Iowa River Landing, which is the fastest-growing retail, restaurant, and cultural hub in Coralville and is steps away from the new Xtream Arena, home to regional and national sporting and cultural events. Converted to the Hyatt Regency brand in late summer 2021, the 286-room property is getting a complete refresh that will reflect the needs and wants of today’s leisure and business travelers. “This renovation will blend the brand’s sophisticated, contemporary design and culinary style with Iowa City’s rich arts, culture, and literary scene,” said Matt Traetow, general manager of Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center. “As tourism continues to pick up in the city and nationally, more travelers are eager to combine business and leisure travel and we’re thrilled to offer best-in-class service with our newly renovated property.” Guest rooms will feature smart lighting and enhanced connectivity as well as custom flooring, furniture, beds, and desks. Each room will also have motion lighting, 55” smart TVs, and hand-selected and curated local art. King rooms will include a chaise lounge for additional leisure, working, and sleeping space. The renovation will add two new suites, increasing the guest room count to 288. As guests enter on the first floor, they will also find a new Regency Club lounge and an expanded gym with new state-of-the-art equipment, including PelotonR bikes, a family lounge, and a resurfaced pool and spa. As part of the transformation, the hotel will debut a new restaurant concept, Watermill Kitchen + Bar, with a spacious outdoor patio that will serve hotel guests, locals, and those from Iowa and beyond looking for a local dining experience that truly exemplifies the destination. The hotel will also offer a new, expanded café and marketplace. The renovations are designed to complement the hotel’s existing amenities, such as the Iowa Writers’ Library (a collection of regional, national, and international writers who graduated from the University of Iowa’s renowned Writer’s Workshop), and the Iowa River Landing Wetland Park that acts as a beautiful and natural backdrop to the property. Throughout the renovation process, the hotel will give back to the community through donations of existing furniture to local organizations, including Iowa City’s Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Houses into Homes. Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center is owned by the city of Coralville and managed by the leading hotel operator, Marcus Hotels & Resorts. “The hotel and restaurant refresh will take this property to the next level and will serve as a showcase for the area offering amenities and experiences you can’t get anywhere else,” said Kelly Hayworth, Coralville City Administrator. “It’s the only full-service hotel in the area, which means it’s ideal for those traveling for sports or performing arts events as well as the increasing number of leisure travelers and remote workers who want a beautiful destination within walking distance of so much.” Located by the Iowa River and Wetland Park, the property is ideally situated for locals and tourists to enjoy nature walks, bird watching and wildlife photography. The hotel is also near Von Maur, an Iowa-based department store that was recently named as the top department store in the nation by Newsweek, and two miles from the highly traveled intersection of I-80 and I-380. Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center will remain open for normal hotel operations during renovations. The Pfister Hotel Expands Treasured Afternoon Tea Service
Guests can now enjoy the hotel’s timeless afternoon tea experience year-round As renowned British-American author Henry James once said, “Under certain circumstances, there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” But do not take his word for it – come experience it for yourself at Milwaukee’s historic Pfister Hotel. At a time when just about everything seems to move a little too quickly, the welcoming staff at the Pfister Hotel invites us to slow down and enjoy a sophisticated and decadent respite. The Pfister, a AAA Four Diamond hotel owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, today announced its Afternoon Tea service will now be offered year-round on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The hotel’s Afternoon Tea has historically paused during summer months, but due to increased demand and the rollout of a new online booking capability through Tock, Afternoon Tea will now be available year-round in order to ensure more guests can enjoy this classic, elegant experience. “Afternoon Tea at The Pfister Hotel is unlike any other occasion, where guests can take in the picturesque views of Milwaukee while enjoying a custom table-side tea experience led by the Pfister’s very own tea butler,” said Brandon Drusch, managing director of The Pfister Hotel. “For over 40 years, generations have visited The Pfister Hotel for this distinguished experience, bringing back their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to enjoy the ritual of Afternoon Tea. Even though times have changed – walking gowns, hats and gloves are no longer required – this beloved tradition continues.” Held in Blu on the 23rd floor, Afternoon Tea allows guests to be surrounded by panoramic views of downtown Milwaukee and Lake Michigan as they enjoy a tableside tea blending presented in all-silver service, including a replica of an 18th century self-tipping teapot. During each Afternoon Tea experience at The Pfister Hotel, guests are visited by a tea butler with a gueridon service trolley who explains the tea, discusses tableside blending options and offers tealeaf samples so guests may enjoy the distinctive aromas of each variety. The tea butler also educates guests about the varieties of tea, the countries of origin and unique flavors, the ways that tea affects mood and health, while offering food and flavor pairing suggestions to go with each variety of tea. The Afternoon Tea menu is complete with fresh scones, sandwiches and pastries. A selection of sparkling wines is available as well. “In my 40 years of serving tea at The Pfister, I have formed so many relationships with loyal guests that enjoy our afternoon tea regularly,” said Juan Rodriguez, tea butler at The Pfister Hotel. “Many of them are so loyal that they began coming as early adults and are now passing on the tradition to their children and grandchildren. Serving the next generation of tea timers is such a special experience and one that I hope makes them guests at Afternoon Tea for years to come.” And there are even more special treats in store for ladies and gentlemen 12 years and younger — an “All Grown Up” menu, featuring warm sipping chocolate, lemonade, cider, or milk as well as roasted turkey and cheddar finger sandwiches, traditional scones, pastries and more. The Pfister Hotel is proud to offer a fine selection of Rishi Teas in 12 varieties with countless variations of flavors, including its signature blend, Pfister 1893. Exclusively crafted in conjunction with Milwaukee-based Rishi Tea, Pfister 1893 features a blend of jasmine and wild rose-scented white teas infused with rejuvenating peppermint and calming lavender. Afternoon tea originated in 19th century England when the after-dinner tea ritual was moved earlier in the day to fill the gap between lunch and a late dinner. Though she did not invent afternoon tea, during the Victorian era, Anna Maria Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, set the trend, inviting friends to join her for afternoon tea whether she was at home or staying with friends. It was not until the early 1900s that afternoon tea was popularized by upscale hotels and grand department stores in the United States. The Pfister’s Afternoon Tea seatings are available Friday through Sunday at 12:00 p.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (414) 935-5950 or through Tock. Afternoon Tea is also available for groups and private parties of up to 40 people. Group reservations can be reserved by emailing m1res@marcuscorp.com. Acosta, a proud first-generation Mexican American and Milwaukee-based visual artist, storyteller, and photographer, will begin work in The Pfister Hotel’s lobby-level artist studio on April 1, 2023. She will succeed current Pfister Artist in Residence and pataphysical illustrator, Christopher T Wood. “Woven throughout the cultural fiber of The Pfister Hotel is a long-standing passion for the arts. Her artwork will be on display in The Pfister Hotel’s Artist in Residence Studio where she will be available to talk about her latest project, her process, and her vision for the Artist in Residence program. Acosta is currently working on a project, HOOPS, which is gaining national recognition for its representation of Latinx roots, rituals, and spirituality. The project is also currently being made into a stage production with the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Acosta intends to expand the project during her time as The Pfister’s Artist in Residence by creating the first edition of a HOOPS coffee table book. As Artist in Residence, she will collect oral and written stories from Pfister guests and the Milwaukee community through film and photography. She will also host open sessions inviting the Milwaukee community to be photographed for the project. In addition to her photographic work, Acosta is a painter, dancer, and storyteller with a professional background in marketing. She is a member of Latinas Unidas en las Artes (LUNA), an organization dedicated to empowering Latinx artists in Milwaukee. “I am thrilled to be The Pfister Hotel’s next Artist in Residence. After starting the HOOPS project in 2019 without a name or goal besides sharing personal stories of what hoop earrings mean to so many, I am so proud of what the project has become,” said Acosta. “I’ve long aspired to be in a space with incredible access to the public. My work is all about helping people tell their stories through art and what better place to do that than at The Pfister Hotel. The quantity and diversity of the hotel guests and the community will help me develop as an artist while entertaining so many guests with my art.” More information about Acosta’s work can be found at www.atsocanicole.com. By drawing a new piece every day during my residency, I will build a web linking hotel guests across time and space, offering a collection of drawings around the studio for all to enjoy. I look forward to this opportunity and to sharing my work with the community,” said Wood. By applying unique processes he has developed over time, Wood creates drawings consisting of powdered graphite and exquisite shading that form distinct creations. He plans to draw a new piece each day that will eventually become a set of drawings, each serving as an extension of the other. The drawings may overlap, enhance or repeat to further showcase the experiences felt at that particular point in time. Wood’s work has been on display in exhibitions around the globe. Currently, his pieces can be seen at Portrait Society Gallery in Milwaukee as well as in the Wisconsin Artists Biennial 2022 exhibition at the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) in West Bend, Wisconsin. He also shares his talent with his students as an adjunct professor at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin and as a lecturer at University Wisconsin – Milwaukee. During his residency, Wood plans to transform one side of the Artist Studio into a viewable working space so guests can witness his process firsthand. The other side of the studio will be a display and reception area allowing guests to see Wood’s daily drawings and to learn their story. The studio will also include the opportunity for visitors to answer a prompt, share an experience or submit an image in order to contribute to Wood’s process. “For 13 years, The Pfister’s Artist in Residence program has put a spotlight on the city’s arts community in a uniquely accessible way,” said Tim Smith, managing director of The Pfister Hotel. “We are thrilled to host Christopher and his amazing talent within the hotel’s Artist Studio. Our guests will be in awe as they watch the transformation of a blank sheet of paper turn into a spectacular piece of art right before their eyes. Christopher’s pieces stand on their own but link in continuum, bringing our guests along in his journey.” More information about Wood’s work can be found at www.christophertwood.com. Nykoli Koslow Brings His Residency to an End Serving as The Pfister’s 12th artist-in-residence, Koslow was awarded the role for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While guests can continue to see his work in the Artist Studio until March 31, 2022, they can also visit Koslow’s new exhibition, “Queer Mythologies: Transabstractions,” in The Gallery at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel through June 26, 2022. Milwaukee’s Secret Spy Refuge Turns 55
Agents can begin their weeklong mission of celebrating Control’s birthday at SafeHouse Milwaukee beginning October 3 For over half of a century, SafeHouse Milwaukee has been a local landmark and cultural icon serving as the city’s secret restaurant and late-night bar that offers refuge to spies from around the globe. On October 8, 2021, Control, the mysterious entity tasked with establishing and maintaining the SafeHouse Restaurants, is celebrating its birthday and SafeHouse’s 55th anniversary. In honor of these exciting milestones, Control has initiated top-secret weeklong missions for agents who find the red door located somewhere in downtown Milwaukee. The secret missions, which are set to begin October 3, will celebrate SafeHouse Milwaukee’s 55th anniversary and Control’s birthday for an entire week with specials every agent can enjoy. Those that reveal the exclusive weeklong code word to a SafeHouse serving accomplice will also receive daily complimentary* rations, refreshments and other spy favorites, including:
*Complimentary items are available with any purchase. Intel has it that there is no cover charge during the top-secret weeklong celebration and reservations are encouraged but not required. As another way to celebrate being Milwaukee’s best kept secret for 55 years, SafeHouse Milwaukee is featuring a new interactive mural installation in the alley near the red door so spies can practice their poses before entering and leaving without a trace. Created by Agent Chroma (a.k.a. Fred Kaems), an award-winning Milwaukee-based multidisciplinary artist, the mural is a clue for spies to locate SafeHouse. Inside SafeHouse, agents can continue to discover the world’s largest puzzle wall and other spy works of art created by the late Agent Two Cents (a.k.a. Carl Ruppert), a local artist who created many of SafeHouse’s iconic characters and artwork. “For generations, Safehouse has offered spies from around the world the gadgets and puzzles they need to test their skills, satisfy their hunger and quench their thirst before their next mission,” said Agent BB (a.k.a. Greg Marcus). “Disappearing chairs, spinning booths and authentic espionage artifacts make Safehouse a must-see destination with the best kept secrets. Whether you are coming back for your 55th time or passing your first clearance test, there is always something new to discover at Safehouse. Just don’t forget the password!” Since opening in 1966, spies have traveled near and far to come to this undercover hideaway. Under the alias, International Exports Ltd., SafeHouse Milwaukee’s location is never divulged. Agents must also provide a password to enter to ensure all who visit are safe spies. However, for spies who do not know the password, a clearance test will be given to prove they are not double agents. Once inside, all can explore a world of global espionage and entertainment with timeless artifacts, movie props, weapons, gadgets, novelty machines and many of the same secrets from 55 years ago. For more information on the latest news and updates from SafeHouse Milwaukee, and to purchase limited edition spy gear, please visit http://www.safe-house.com/. About the SafeHouse Restaurants SafeHouse, managed by Marcus Restaurant Group, a division of Marcus Hotels & Resorts, is a local landmark and cultural icon, attracting hungry spies from around the world. Having two covert locations in Chicago and Milwaukee, SafeHouse challenges spies with an all-encompassing experience and a one-of-a-kind mission during their visit. The Chicago location features a 21st century design led by award-winning firms, The Gettys Group and Epstein Global, while the Milwaukee location boasts 55 years of spy history, gadgetry and the world’s largest puzzle wall.
