The Perfect Fall Weekend in Lake Geneva, WI

Monday, October 24, 2016
Sometimes taking a day off is all you need to get back in to the swing of things. Just a couple of days ago, Sarah and I headed up to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for a little girls weekend. We picked the perfect date to make the most of the changing leaves and fall weather. Of course, we thought it was going to be all sunny blue skies and a cool lake breeze with gorgeous red and orange leaves…. well, we were about half way there. It was a whole lot of breeze and very mild skies (hint hint: the bright photos!). We aimed to knock out a few blog shoots, but staying at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa had us super relaxed and before we knew it, our to-do lists went out the door and in came room service ????

Both Sarah and I actually don’t have cars, so we decided to use the local service Getaround (c/o) to help us plan our trip. I typically just use a rental car, but this was actually perfect for what we planned for the weekend. I picked it up right in my neighborhood and dropped it off in the same area. The plus side to many other rental or car sharing services is that these cars are free of any promo stickers making it the perfect incognito vehicle. Definitely a car sharing program worth checking out if you’re planning any weekend trips on a whim!

Before we even arrived at the resort, we made sure to stop at a local apple orchard first. Although apple picking season was over, we had a chance to explore the grounds and meet the sweet farm animals. Once we took our little break, we headed on up to the hotel with gorgeous fall decorations to greet us. We were pretty sure that the pretty decorated entrance was a sign for the perfect fall weekend!

One of the first items on our list was a trip to the Riding Stables on property. Yes, that’s right, on property! After heading in to downtown Lake Geneva for coffee in the morning, we headed over to the stables for an afternoon ride. Not going to lie, it’s been a little while since I was last in the saddle…literally, but it was a nice and slow ride through the woods. A great little moment to sit back and take in the scenery, and boy, was it gorgeous! Of course I had to toss on my riding boots for the occasion ????
If you haven’t read my last fifty blog post where I talk about how much I love lambs, I’m here to tell you I love lambs. They are the cutest little farm animals I ever did see! (This is a sheep and a goat, but you get the point!)
One of our last fall moments of the trip was a seat on the haunted hayride. The entire time leading up to the ride I kept telling Sarah, “Oh don’t worry. It won’t be scary. They are just normal people who dressed up – Besides, they can’t come on the actual hayride!” Well friends, was I sure wrong. As soon as we got on the truck we found out they can come on. Shoot were we scared!! I mean screaming our brains out. However, the mom across from us was squatted down in a fetal position.. and we managed to stay on the bench.
And just like that, the trip was coming to a quick close. We tried our best to soak in every little bit of our morning before we had to pack our things and head out. We made some coffee in the room and got ready to take another little trip downtown before heading home. We stopped at a cute diner, Lake-Aire, in town for breakfast and then, took another look at the boats in the harbor for a final goodbye.

If you’re thinking of taking a weekend trip out of Chicago, I sincerely suggest the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa. I actually have it on my list to head back to this winter. I love a good fire right on the ski slopes. Everyone one should really treat themselves once in a while, don’t you agree?

XO

Laffy Taffy is Wisconsin’s favorite Halloween candy

Better stock up on Laffy Taffy for trick-or-treating this year. The sticky candy is apparently a favorite for Wisconsinites.

That’s according to Influenster, which surveyed more than 40,000 people across the country to determine each state’s Halloween candy of choice.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups received the most votes overall, and was one of only three treats (including Kit Kat and Butterfinger) that were voted among the top favorites in every state. Candy corn was crowned the candy king in the most number of states (five).

When it comes to costumes, Harley Quinn is a favorite so far this Halloween in Milwaukee and across the country. The costume ranked No. 1 in Google’s “Frightgeist,”a look at the most popular get-ups in the U.S. based on the top 500 costume searches.

Pirate was the second most popular costume in Milwaukee, with superhero, Joker and unicorn rounding out the top five.

Harley Quinn, a DC Comics character featured in the summer movie “Suicide Squad,” was also the most popular costume in Madison, Eau Claire and Green Bay, but people in Rhinelander are apparently more interested in dinosaurs — maybe it’s a hodag thing.

Resorts voted best in the Midwest

The busy summer and fall travel seasons are mostly over, which means it’s the perfect time for a quieter getaway.

And according to the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, you don’t have to go too far for a good one.

Five Wisconsin resorts were named among the top 10 resorts in the Midwest in the magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Canoe Bay, a cozy, romantic resort in Chetek with a rustic, Northwoods feel, was No. 1 on the list, while the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake (No. 4), The American Club in Kohler (No. 6), the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa (No. 8) and the Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells (No. 10) all also made the list.

More than 300,000 readers cast votes for more than 7,000 hotels, judging them on rooms, service, location, food, activities, value and more.
