Great Weekend Trips from Milwaukee

By: Kristine Hansen

Lake Geneva
Distance from Milwaukee: 50 miles

Why Go: Years ago this lakeside enclave was a summer-home haven for Chicago’s elite, families like the Sears and the Wrigleys, whose mansions still grace Lake Geneva. The downtown boasts adorable shops selling luxury soaps, goods imported from Ireland, and gotta-have-it kitchen gadgets. There are also a few wineries with tasting rooms, such as Studio Winery (live music on Saturday afternoons). Cruise around the lake on a guided tour from Lake Geneva Cruise Line. Accommodations range from historic bed-and-breakfasts like Maxwell House and Baker House to the comfy-and-luxe Grand Geneva Resort, with a spa, golf course, a steakhouse, firepits, a pool and plenty of on-site recreation.

The Ghost Guest Travels: Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

I’m back from my unintentional blogging hiatus! Life has been pretty hectic as of late and I’ve been doing a lot of traveling, including a weekend trip up to Lake Geneva, WI that I wanted to share with you.

The BF and I decided to spend a relaxing weekend away in Lake Geneva, and with the help of the awesome people at General Motors, they let me borrow a brand new Chevy Equinox to take for a spin. The BF sold his car two years ago and since then, we’ve been getting by without one. I will say, once you have a car again. it’s REALLY nice. The 1.5 hour drive to Lake Geneva was a breeze in the comfort of our fully-equipped Equinox. It was easy to drive, came with a ton of safety features, and was easy to park, despite it’s size.

We decided to stay at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, an award-winning resort in Lake Geneva. The Grand Geneva originally opened in 1968 as the Lake Geneva Playboy Club Hotel…yes, that Playboy. Several of our friends had stayed there and enjoyed it, so we knew we’d have a great time. The resort has 335 guest rooms, a spa and salon, two championship golf courses, skiing, snowboarding, a convention center, fitness center, and three restaurants. Yes, it’s that big.

We checked into our room overlooking the resort’s lake and golf course and both commented on how quiet it was. It was so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of the coolest features of our room was the TV built into the bathroom mirror, ensuring we wouldn’t miss a second of Keeping Up With the Kardashians ????

Geneva ChopHouse
That evening, we had reservations at Geneva ChopHouse, located at the Grand Geneva Resort. It was great to be able to walk down the hall from our hotel room to dinner. The restaurant is a traditional steakhouse with a variety of steaks, chops, seafood, and sides. The place was jam-packed the night we dined there, resulting in a 30 minute wait for our table past our reservation.

We started with the ChopHouse salad and farmers market salad. The ChopHouse was a traditional chopped salad with chopped greens, blue cheese, bacon, tomatoes, eggs, cucumber and champagne-chive vinaigrette. I thought the salad was way too soggy and tasted like someone had pre-tossed the salad well before it was served to us. The farmers market salad was much better, featuring baby greens, beets, green beans, goat cheese, walnuts, diced tomatoes, and a tangy mustard vinaigrette. It had more of a fresh and crisp taste.

The BF and I both ordered steaks and split two sides. He had the New York strip, while I had the filet. Our sides included a twice baked potato, and Brussels sprouts. The steaks were both well seasoned and cooked to our liking, while the sides were lacking in flavor. The potato was dull and lukewarm, while the Brussels sprouts could have used some more roasting time.

Geneva ChopHouse definitely has the prices of a Chicago steakhouse, but the food is not the same caliber. Was I expecting a Chicago steakhouse experience? No. But I was expecting a little bit more oomph from the food. I will say, our server was excellent and our food arrived promptly. I do think there are other restaurants where you could spend the same amount of money and have an overall better experience though.

I’m giving Geneva ChopHouse 3.5 ghosts out of 5.

After brunch, the rain hit, and it did not stop for the rest of the day. We knew we’d have to stay inside, so we headed to the fitness center. The fitness center is huge and features a gym, fitness studio with daily classes, tennis, basketball courts, rock climbing wall, and a pool. The BF and I played one on one basketball, and indoor tennis, and checked out the connected spa. We didn’t go for any treatments but I could have used a massage after playing basketball and tennis!

After working up a sweat, we took the time to relax by the fireplace in the Grand Geneva’s main lobby which was super cozy.

HOTELS Magazine – The App King: Content is King

The Pfister Hotel’s Augmented Reality Art Tour is featuring in the March issue of HOTELS magazine. Launched in 2014, the original goal of the AR app was to make art more relevant and accessible to younger demographics, especially millennials. Since its inception, the hotel has also “augmented” the coasters that are used in the bars, restaurants and banquet rooms, and soon it will augment the artist in residence legacy pieces that are in a select number of guestrooms. The hotel will film the artists standing next to their prints, so when a guest puts the device up to a painting, the artist “appears.” – See more at: http://www.hotelsmag.com/Industry/News/Details/64969#sthash.Gis3DTky.dpuf

A Healthy Focus on Wellness

By: Susan Jacobs

From A to Z, innovative programs help planners take better care of attendees
Health and wellness used to be an afterthought in the meetings industry. Events were usually staged in dark, stuffy rooms; the gym consisted of little more than a stationary bike and some weights; and food in airports, planes and sometimes even hotels themselves was pitiful.
How times have changed! Today, airports sell kale salad, meetings occur in light-filled spaces and hotel gyms are bona fide fitness centers with impressive spas. Are you gluten-free? No problem. The hotel kitchen staff will happily prepare tasty dishes to meet your dietary requirements. Forgot your workout wear? Don’t sweat it. Westin has a gear-lending partnership with New Balance, Trump Hotel Collection has partnered with Under Armour and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts works with Reebok. Theradical transformation is bringing joy to planners and attendees.
“A happy guest is a healthy guest,” says Dr. Ernest Brown, a Washington, DC-based physician who serves as medical advisor to several hotels in the nation’s capital. He cites Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square as an example of a property concerned about health. The hotel regularly hosts events where community partners provide information and free consultations. “And with the assistance of a dietician, their executive chef developed a fantastic menu that provides calorie counts,” Brown says.
Hotels have a sound business reason for this: Wellness offerings attract younger travelers. In a recent study by MMGY Global, 45 percent of millennials and 38 percent of Gen Xers said that the presence of spas and fitness centers influence where they choose to stay.
In order to appeal to younger demographic groups as well as baby boomers concerned about their health, planners are taking a closer look at hotels that emphasize wellness. From A to Z, we toast some of the most interesting health and wellness innovations offered for travelers today.

Blood flow to the brain declines after 10 minutes of sitting still. In response, planners are moving their groups outdoors. At Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, meeting attendees can compete in a challenging Beach Olympics/Survivor event. Utilizing their lazy river and waterslide, The Hilton Orlando offers a high intensity, Amazing Race-style event that promotes teamwork and camaraderie. Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, Florida, offers a Paddle & Run competition where teams launch glass-bottom sea kayaks, paddle around a 525-foot fishing pier and return to the beach. Nothing says beachside wellness like a morning beach spin class at one of the top beaches in America. At Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, participants don headphones so noncycling guests are not disturbed. The award-winning Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona, offers 380 different experiences, many of them physically challenging. Popular classes at hotels include surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, flash mob exercises, boot camp and Zumba. HoopFit, performed with light-up hula hoops at Well & Being at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, is unique. At Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, meeting attendees can scale a 35-foot-tall indoor climbing wall, while guests at The National Conference Center in Leesburg, Virginia, can sample high and low ropes courses and a climbing wall.
