Four Marcus Restaurant Properties Awarded Wine Spectator Recognition

Marcus Restaurant Group Logo

Marcus® Restaurant Group announced today that four of its premier properties – Mason Street Grill and Milwaukee ChopHouse in Milwaukee; Capitol ChopHouse in Madison, Wis.; and Grey Rock at the Heidel House Resort & Spa in Green Lake, Wis. – have earned a 2017 Wine Spectator award to recognize their respective wine programs.

Mason Street Grill has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence five years in a row, while Grey Rock has earned the award for its 15th year. In 2017, Capitol ChopHouse and Milwaukee ChopHouse are both receiving the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the first time.

The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence recognizes fewer than 2,400 restaurants each year, requiring at least 90 wine options and a well-chosen assortment of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the restaurant menu.

“We are proud to have four Marcus restaurants recognized for this prestigious ranking,” said Susan Terry, vice president of food & beverage operations for Marcus Hotels & Resorts. “It reflects the thoughtful selection and high quality of wines that our teams pair with our restaurants’ exceptional cuisine.”

To be considered for a 2017 Wine Spectator Award, each Marcus Restaurant property submitted an application highlighting its particular strengths:

Mason Street Grill – With more than 290 wines available by the glass or bottle, downtown Milwaukee’s Mason Street Grill offers a diverse selection of quality wines from all major wine producing regions throughout the world. The restaurant boasts a strong selection of wines from the western United States – California, Oregon and Washington, and regularly brings in upper-tier and limited-release wines from that region and others.

Milwaukee ChopHouse – Newly recognized this year, the Milwaukee ChopHouse, located inside the Hilton Milwaukee City Center, offers more than 150 wines that complement the restaurant’s selection of quality steaks and entrees. The restaurant also regularly partners with vineyards and wineries across the U.S. to bring unique tasting experiences to guests, locals and visitors alike.

Capitol ChopHouse – Similar to the Milwaukee ChopHouse, the Capitol ChopHouse, located in downtown Madison, Wis. at the Hilton Madison Monona Terrace, earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the first time this year. The restaurant added more than 30 wines to its wine menu, which has a selection of more than 180 wines total. With wines ranging from sparkling whites to Cabernet Sauvignon, the restaurant’s wines pair well with the traditional steak house cuisine that features locally sourced products and seasonal produce.

Grey Rock – Located at the Heidel House Resort & Spa in Green Lake, Wis., Grey Rock has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 2002. In a relaxed, lakefront setting, the restaurant offers fine dining with approximately 115 wines available by the glass or bottle and a strong emphasis on California wines. Grey Rock also features two wines from Wisconsin on its menu.

“We care about every guest experience. Since wine can be, and often is, a critical component to the meal, we are continuing to increase our offerings and selection at all of our restaurants,” added Terry. “This recognition proves that the hard work of our restaurant teams is paying off.”

About The Pfister Hotel
The Pfister Hotel has been the premier hotel in downtown Milwaukee for over 120 years. Originally built in 1893 by businessman Guido Pfister, it was the most lavish hotel of its time. The hotel’s storied elegance had faded following World War II, until 1962, when Ben Marcus, founder of The Marcus Corporation, purchased this grand hotel out of bankruptcy. The Marcus family renovated and restored the hotel to its original glory, adding convention facilities, a parking garage and 23-story guest tower. The Pfister Hotel remains home to the largest collection of Victorian art of any hotel in the world, and offers an interactive augmented reality tour of pieces in this impressive collection.

Today the Pfister Hotel continues its tradition of gracious service and impeccable style, and has been recognized for 41 consecutive years by AAA as a Four-Diamond property. In 2017, The Pfister Hotel was ranked the No. 1 Best Milwaukee Hotel by U.S. News & World Report. This exceptional property is a member of two prestigious hotel organizations, Historic Hotels of America and Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. The Pfister Hotel is located at 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. in downtown Milwaukee. For more information, please visit www.thepfisterhotel.com and follow the hotel on Facebook and Twitter (@PfisterHotel).

Shh…Hilton Milwaukee City Center’s Secret Sculpture Garden Begins June 21

Local artist’s sculptures will be featured at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center throughout the summer

MILWAUKEE – June 19, 2017 – The Hilton Milwaukee City Center, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, will host a Secret Sculpture Garden in 6th and Green, the hotel’s outside courtyard, from June 21 through September 4, 2017. The public is invited to visit the secret garden and see local artist, Joel Pfeiffer’s 17 breathtaking stainless steel and fused glass sculptures in the “Walk of Wonder” exhibit.

The Secret Sculpture Garden will begin on Wednesday, June 21 with an opening reception from 5 – 8 p.m. Guests will be able to walk amongst the sculptures and meet Pfeiffer as he discusses his inspiration for each piece. The event will include a cash bar and a la carte food for purchase, as well as live music from Painted Caves, a Milwaukee-based band known for their Arabian-inspired folk music and mesmerizing performances. The hotel will also host happy hours in the space every Friday from 5 – 9 p.m. June 23 through September 1, 2017.

“I’m thrilled to feature my outdoor colored glass and stainless-steel sculptures at the Hilton Milwaukee,” said Joel Pfeiffer, local artist. “The green space at the Hilton lends a perfect landscape for the interplay of color and light throughout the day. I’m inspired by this fusion of color, glass and light for the “Walk of Wonder” exhibit.”

Pfeiffer, who resides in Hartland, Wisconsin, has had numerous shows and exhibitions, received countless arts and education awards, and has presented at many conferences and events, most often as a keynote speaker. He has had a number of major international and community art installations throughout the state. One of his most notable installations is the American-Soviet Mural Project, an 8’ x 36’ ceramic mural installed at the Mitchell International Airport since 1990.

Pfeiffer is also known throughout the community for his clay stomps, which mixes dry ingredients into clay for ceramic works of art. Over the past 33 years, Pfeiffer has facilitated over 80 clay stomps for schools, art museums, libraries and other community events. The clay stomps allow people to be a part of his art work and have fun.

The Secret Sculpture Garden is a sanctioned Sculpture Milwaukee event, a nonprofit organization that has brought 22 sculptures by 21 different artists along Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. All of Pfeiffer’s sculptures in the Secret Sculpture Garden will be available for purchase.

The opening reception and Secret Sculpture Garden are free and open to the public. For more information about the Secret Sculpture Garden, visit the event website, or, you can check for more details via Facebook or Twitter @HiltonMilwaukee.

Tenth Narrator-in-Residence Succeeds Dominic Inouye

Milwaukee, Wis., May 23, 2017 – The historic AAA Four-Diamond Pfister Hotel, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, today announced Nicole Mattke as its tenth “Pfister Narrator.” In this role, Mattke will spend time in the hotel’s lobby and public spaces interacting with visitors and guests and sharing their stories on The Pfister’s award-winning blog (blog.thepfisterhotel.com). As narrator-in-residence, Mattke will share her experiences at the hotel through blog entries at least twice each week over the course of a year. She also plans to host events and book clubs to bring the literary community together.

“I am so honored to be named the next Pfister Narrator. This is truly my dream job and I can’t wait to begin interacting with visitors and guests, and writing about the experiences that make the Pfister so unique,” said Mattke. “I plan to link the Pfister’s long history with the guests that travel here today. My vision for this position is to bring a vibrant literary culture to the Pfister through seasonal mini-events with book themes, monthly book clubs and monthly story prompts for guests and the entire community.”

As a published author, Mattke has received honors for her writing and has presented her work at various events throughout the community. Her talents lie in creating stunning pieces of writing that reveal the beauty in daily life. A busy mother of two sets of twins, Mattke finds time to write in a variety of genres as well as contribute to blogs.

Mattke was chosen to serve as the hotel’s tenth narrator-in-residence based on her excellent writing and vision for the role. She was selected from a pool of applicants by a review panel consisting of local writers, editors and representatives from the hotel. She succeeds Dominic Inouye, who served as the ninth Pfister Narrator.

“We are thrilled for Nicole to be the next narrator-in-residence,” said Tim Smith, general manager of The Pfister Hotel. “Nicole will bring new and exciting events to the hotel for the entire family. Guests and staff will enjoy her friendly and outgoing personality as she engages with them in the lobby, café and throughout the hotel.”
