Hotel Phillips Unveils New Artist-in-Residence Room to Support Local Arts Organization, Hello Art

Hotel Phillips Logo

Room reflects Artist-in-Residence Madeline Gallucci’s vision of Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo., February 11, 2015 – Hotel Phillips, a historic boutique hotel located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, unveiled its new guest room to the public, the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Room, at the Hello Art 5th Anniversary Celebration February 6, 2015.  Each night the room is reserved, Hotel Phillips will donate a portion of the proceeds to Hello Art, a local arts organization offering fun and informative events that bring together all those in the local community who want to appreciate and support the arts.

The inspiration and design behind the AIR Room came from current Artist-in-Residence, Madeline Gallucci. During the month of January, Gallucci transformed a junior guest room suite into a brilliant piece of work, now called the AIR Room. The room serves as an inspiration to those who appreciate the arts community and the city.  The room encompasses the local Kansas City vibe and atmosphere, incorporating Kansas City landmarks and visuals that make the city a great place to live, work and play.

Gerald Rappaport, general manager of the Hotel Phillips, calls the room “a unique experience” and says, “We have always had a strong passion for supporting the local Kansas City arts community, and the AIR Room gives us a chance to further tell that story and share our rich art culture with hotel guests.  The Hotel Phillips plays a central role in connecting visitors with the local arts community and encourage them to take notice of this local movement that is such a vibrant part of Kansas City.”

Gallucci said she was inspired by sights in Kansas City such as reflections of the iconic Kansas City Power & Light sign, the pastel January sunsets, and the commotion of the streets on a Friday night.  “I wanted to bring these experiences back into the interior space and context of a hotel guest room. I’ve strived to detail these romantic urban observations within my painting, and let hotel guests temporarily experience and live in this transitory space, making their own observations about the city and the art.”

The AIR Room is just one component of Hotel Phillips’ Artist-in-Residence program.  Now in the fourth year of the program, the Hotel Phillips annually selects a new artist to showcase his or her work at a studio inside the hotel, as well as throughout the hotel and within its award-winning restaurant, 12 Baltimore.

This initiative is just one of many arts-focused programs the Hotel Phillips supports. In addition supporting and partnering with Hello Art, Hotel Phillips is also hosting several art workshops throughout the month of February, which are open to the public. To view the full list of events, please visit Hotel Phillips’ website.

Located in the epicenter of the local arts community, Hotel Phillips is proud to support local artists, musicians and arts organizations within Kansas City, and play a part in continuing to build upon the city’s reputation as a leading arts community.

Experience a Weekend of Wisconsin Craft Beer in Green Lake

Get away to Heidel House Resort & Spa for a weekend of everything beer: A Homebrew How-To, Brew Fest and Beer-Themed Spa Services.

Green Lake, Wis. – Feb. 10, 2015 – Heidel House Resort & Spa’s annual brew event has grown to an entire weekend celebrating Wisconsin beer. Microbrew enthusiasts will not only enjoy the popular Brew Fest craft beer tasting on Saturday, March 28, but also a newly-added Homebrew How-To event scheduled to take place Friday, March 27. To complete their beer vacation, guests are invited to try a beer-themed bath or pedicure at the hotel’s Evensong Spa.

Homebrew How-To

After a long work week, the Homebrew How-To is the perfect way to kick off a well-deserved weekend away. From 7 to 10 p.m., the Society of Oshkosh Brewers will provide an interactive introduction to the art of home-brewing. Since its establishment in 1991, this group has gathered once per month to drink its members’ homebrew, swap recipes and techniques, talk beer and have fun. Now, it is one of the largest home-brewing clubs in the Midwest.

During Homebrew How-To, the Society of Oshkosh Brewers will share its knowledge by presenting a step-by-step, hands-on demonstration of home-brewing. In this workshop, guests will be able to sample finished products and learn the art of beer tasting.

Admission to the Homebrew How-To event is $20 per person, but the admission fee is waived with Friday and Saturday night hotel room reservations and the purchase of a Brew Fest ticket. To reserve your place, please call 800.444.2812.

Heidel House Brew Fest

Brew Fest is Heidel House Resort’s annual craft beer tasting event, featuring over 100 different Wisconsin microbrews for guests to enjoy. Mingle with representatives from the state’s finest microbreweries and taste their new and most beloved flavors in a souvenir tasting glass. All breweries in attendance will offer four different beers that will compete for the title of the 2015 People’s Choice. Each attendee will have the opportunity to cast a vote for his or her favorite beer and the winning beer will be placed on tap at Heidel House Resort for the summer season.

New this year will be Pigeon River Brewing Co. of Marion, Wis., and Badger State Brewing Co. of Green Bay, Wis. A few of the returning favorites are Sand Creek Brewing Co. of Black River Falls, Wis., O’so Brewing Co. of Plover, Wis. and Lakefront Brewery of Milwaukee, Wis.

In addition to the microbrews, Vines & Rushes Winery of Ripon, Wis., will offer tastings of its local wines from Wisconsin-grown grapes. Ciderboys Cider Co. of Stevens Point, Wis., will also offer a sweeter alternative to beer with its refreshing hard ciders featuring hints of apple, strawberry, raspberry and peach.

The $35 Brew Fest ticket includes a souvenir tasting glass, appetizers, live entertainment from Dan Braaksma Band and unlimited sampling from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Brew Fest 2015 will take place throughout Heidel House Resort’s lake view Dartford Ballroom as well as Sandstone and Daycholah meeting rooms. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

Advance ticket purchase is recommended. Please call 800.444.2812 to purchase tickets.

Evensong Spa Beer Services

In conjunction with Heidel House Resort’s 4th annual Brew Fest, Evensong Spa has crafted new ways to enjoy Wisconsin’s most popular beverage during the month of March.

Ancient Romans once used beer baths to sweat out toxins, exfoliate skin and infuse the body with vitamins. Today there are dedicated “beer spas” in Europe, but sadly only a handful of spas in the U.S. offer such services.

The Evensong Spa team has taken it upon itself to diligently research this under-served industry and craft its own beer spa services!  Throughout the month of March, these Evensong Spa beer services will be featured:

  • Renew & Brew Bath Cure – $50: A frothy warm beer bath consisting of a potent brew of dark ale and mineral water. Beer bubbles offer a subtle yet tingling massage which serves to open your skin’s pores and release toxins. Hops function as a purifying agent, exfoliating dry and dull skin. Active beer yeast provides a wide range of vitamins, proteins and saccharides while contributing to overall softening and regeneration of the skin. And, of course, enjoy a pint of your choice while blissfully soaking your stress away…

We recommend following this 20 minute treatment with your choice of steam room or waterfall whirlpool soak, both located in our relaxation room.

  • Hops & Honey Pedicure – $75: A toast to you! Beer is a natural anti-bacterial, cleaning and sanitizing your feet while yeast enzymes soften and exfoliate dry skin and callouses. After soaking, your feet and calves will be massaged with a lime salt scrub followed by a super hydrating citrus lotion. Finish with Evensong Spa’s divine honey-based moisture serum that seals in moisture and re-energizes tired feet.

Sit back and enjoy a cold one (beer of your choice) during this 50 minute beer-infused pedicure.

For both beer-themed spa treatments, guests can choose from New Glarus Spotted Cow, Blacktop, Moon Man and Fat Squirrel.

Drill Divas Ice Fishing Package is an Adventurous Girlfriend Getaway Experience at Heidel House Resort & Spa

Women are invited to learn to ice fish, guided by area expert Mike Norton, and then enjoy a warm and relaxing experience at Evensong Spa.

GREEN LAKE, Wis. – Jan. 15, 2015 – January is the perfect time to plan a “Girlfriends Getaway” weekend after a busy holiday season comes to an end.  Women looking to be adventurous and learn a new winter recreation activity will be excited for Heidel House Resort & Spa’s first ever Drill Divas Ice Fishing Package. You don’t have to be an expert ice angler to enjoy ice fishing – the Drill Divas Ice Fishing Package provides the equipment and the knowledge for a fun ice fishing experience followed by relaxation in the resort’s award-winning Evensong Spa.  Drill Divas is perfect for beginners who have never experienced ice fishing or for those looking for a fun adventure to try with girlfriends this winter.

“We wanted to create a unique winter experience for women combining adventure and relaxation.  Our ice fishing package offers a way to enjoy the outdoors, catch up with friends and unwind. We encourage women looking for an out-of-the-ordinary getaway to grab their girlfriends and experience ice fishing at its best on Big Green Lake this winter,” said Scott Krause, Heidel House general manager.

Ice Fishing

Adventurous girlfriends can enjoy a day on Big Green Lake.

To ensure a comfortable experience, participants will be prepped on proper ice fishing attire and will be taken to a heated ice fishing shanty.  The adventure will begin with a hot, hearty breakfast in the resort’s Sunroom restaurant. They will then be shuttled to a top fishing location on Big Green Lake, Wisconsin’s deepest inland lake, met by the area’s most popular fishing-guide service – Mike Norton’s Fishing and Hunting.

Norton’s will provide all the fishing equipment the ladies need for a successful day on the ice. This includes a heated fishing shanty, tackle and bait. Each Drill Diva will also receive two water bottles, a thermos of Apple Spiced Bourbon toddies or mulled wine, hand warmers and a freshly-prepared box lunch.  At the end of the fishing trip, Mike Norton’s Fishing and Hunting team will clean and package the fresh catch to take home.

Mike Norton advocates ice fishing as a bonding experience; “Many enjoy the intimacy that ice fishing offers. It’s as much about the social interaction as the actual fishing.  Friends enjoy sitting in a warm shack while having a few drinks and taking in the calm, tranquil snowy lake.  You don’t need to know how to fish to enjoy ice fishing – it’s about the adventure and enjoying the company you are with.”

IMG_2900

Mike Norton’s experts are there every step of the ice fishing journey.

After returning from the lake, the group will make their way to Evensong Spa, where they will shed snowsuits and slip into luxurious robes. Guests can choose to enjoy the spa’s waterfall whirlpool, eucalyptus steam room and fireplace-warmed relaxation room, and then be treated to a 50-minute Labyrinth Heated Stone Massage.  During this massage, smooth heated stones are combined with soothing massage techniques to promote grounding, balancing and a deep sense of relaxation. The heat from the stones relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to target zones and enhance the healing process.

Heidel House Resort will send everyone home with their clean and packaged catch, as well as a commemorative photo of the group’s day on the ice.

Drill Divas Package Details

The Drill Divas package includes overnight accommodations at Heidel House Resort. Drill Divas Ice Fishing Package rates start at $260 per person.

Intercontinental® Milwaukee Celebrates Five-Year Anniversary of ‘Pink Rooms’

the pink room

Hotel will unveil progress of renovated rooms,  present local breast cancer charity with largest donation to date at public celebration

Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 5, 2014InterContinental® Milwaukee, which is owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, is celebrating the five-year anniversary of its Pink Rooms—two special guest rooms designed to build awareness, raise funds, offer support and foster hope for those fighting breast cancer. Over the past five years, a portion of the proceeds from each stay in the rooms has been donated to ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, a Milwaukee-based organization whose mission is to provide free, personalized information and one-to-one support to people affected by breast cancer—patients, families and friends.

In honor of the milestone, the two Pink Rooms each have been given distinct new looks with updated upholstery, wall coverings, window treatments and accessories. The progress on the renovated rooms, designed pro bono by two local women, Ann Torcivia Hruz and Sue McCaffrey, will be unveiled at a public reception celebrating the anniversary on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in CLEAR Bar & Lounge, located inside the hotel. The designers worked with several vendors, including Atlas Carpet Mills, Calico Corners, City Lights, D. L. Couch Wallcovering, Designtex, Kellex, Pro Wisconsin, and Stu’s Flooring, who donated the new furnishings for the rooms at or below cost.

The evening of the event, Tim Smith, general manager of InterContinental Milwaukee, will be presenting ABCD with a check for $12,000—proceeds from the past year’s overnight stays in the Pink Rooms. The latest check brings the total donated since the inception of the program to nearly $50,000. Since the Pink Rooms opened, more than 2,000 guests from 42 states and 12 different countries have stayed the night in the special guest rooms.

“Over the past several years, the Pink Rooms have served as powerful symbols of hope and encouragement for both our employees and guests,” said Smith. “We are proud to be active in the local breast cancer awareness community and look forward to continuing our partnership with ABCD.”

“InterContinental Milwaukee and The Pink Room began its partnership with ABCD five years ago—and an amazing five years it has been,” adds Ginny Finn, executive director of ABCD. “The Pink Room project serves the dual purpose of significantly raising the profile of ABCD’s free services and raising funds to make sure all those who turn to us are served at no charge.”

At 5:00 p.m., the reception, featuring complimentary cake, appetizers and a specialty pink drink, ‘Tree of Hope’ contributions, and temporary pink hair painting from WELL Spa + Salon, will begin. A special presentation will be held at 6:00 p.m., with ABCD board member remarks and the check presentation from InterContinental Milwaukee to ABCD. The event will continue until 7:30 p.m. with Pink Room tours, raffles, and more.

On display at Gallerie M that evening through the end of October, will be photographer John Grant’s new exhibit, The Pink Balloon Project. The exhibit features patients and survivors of breast cancer.  “Pink” in the name The Pink Balloon Project signifies women with breast cancer. “Balloon” represents the buoyancy and sense of hope one needs to fight disease; it also represents lightness, and an ability to rise above obstacles. All of the women featured in the exhibit have been active with ABCD.

Over the years, InterContinental Milwaukee’s Pink Room concept has won numerous awards, including Honorable Mention in PR News’ Corporate Social Responsibility Awards anda national ‘Stars of the Industry’ award from American Hotel & Lodging Association in the category of guest relations.

CLEAR is located inside InterContinental Milwaukee at 139 E. Kilbourn Ave., Milwaukee, WI, 53202. Find the hotel on Facebook (facebook.com/InterContinentalMilwaukee) or follow it on Twitter (@InterConMKE) to learn more about upcoming exhibits, events and specials.

About the Pink Room

The initial idea for the Pink Room project came from three InterContinental Milwaukee employees’—who all share a personal connection with the disease—desire to support the fight against breast cancer. When guests of the Pink Room enter their room they’re greeted by an abundance of pink—from the comforter to the commissioned artwork. They’ll notice a laptop on the desk that opens up to the Pink Room blog, where they can read previous guests’ survival stories, learn about breast cancer events in the area and much more. InterContinental Milwaukee’s guests have been inspired by design concept and stories left on the Pink Room blog since the hotel began taking reservations for the Pink Rooms.
