Intercontinental Milwaukee Honored with ‘Stars of the Industry’ Award from American Hotel & Lodging Association

MILWAUKEE – April 4, 2014 – InterContinental® Milwaukee, which is owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, has been honored with a national ‘Stars of the Industry’ award from American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) in the category of guest relations for a medium property. The awards program recognizes lodging employees and properties that best symbolize the quality service of the industry.

The award in the guest relations category is given for programs that develop a climate conducive to new or repeat business, create goodwill among guests, or provide special services. InterContinental Milwaukee won for its Pink Room initiative.

“The Pink Room is a project that has united our staff, given back to our community, and brought awareness to a great cause,” said Tim Smith, general manager of InterContinental Milwaukee. “We are honored to have been recognized with this prestigious award, and look forward to continuing the program for years to come.”

When guests stay in one of InterContinental Milwaukee’s two Pink Rooms, a portion of the proceeds from each stay is donated to ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, a Milwaukee-based organization whose mission is to provide free, personalized information and one-to-one support to people affected by breast cancer—patients, families and friends.

Upon entering the Pink Room, guests are greeted by an abundance of pink—from the comforter to the commissioned artwork. There’s a laptop on the desk that opens up to the Pink Room blog, pinkroomstories.com, where guests can read previous guests’ survival stories, learn about breast cancer events in the area, and more. Since the Pink Room opened in 2009, it has raised more than $40,000 in donations for ABCD.

Hilton Madison Launches “Carbone Ribbon Room” to Support the UW Carbone Cancer Center

logo_hilton_madison2CRR Logo

Madison, Wis., February 5, 2014. . . . .The Hilton Madison Monona Terrace hotel, owned and managed by Milwaukee-based Marcus Hotels & Resorts, today announced its Carbone Ribbon Room, to support the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC).  Each night the room is reserved, the Hilton Madison will donate $25 to UWCCC.  Patients being treated at UWCCC will also have the opportunity to stay in the Carbone Ribbon Room, as an effort to provide additional relaxation and support during their road to recovery.  The Carbone Ribbon Room will be unveiled to the media and the public on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at a special ribbon cutting ceremony and reception.

As a result of the 1971 National Cancer Act, the Carbone Cancer Center was established at UW-Madison as one of the first six university-based comprehensive cancer centers of excellence. The UWCCC is involved in groundbreaking clinical trials and research studies to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

The Hilton Madison has reconfigured and redesigned one of the hotel’s premium lakeview rooms to offer a bright and inspirational environment. The Carbone Ribbon Room will feature a journal to share personal stories, a compilation of sentimental narratives, and many more local, unique elements.  The artwork in the room is commissioned by local Madison artist and resident, Angelina Paoli.  Paoli is a cancer survivor herself.  The Carbone Ribbon Room logo represents multiple cancer awareness ribbons, and the bow shape represents the gift committed towards funding cancer research through the Carbone Ribbon Room project.

To learn more about the story behind the creation of the room, please watch this inspiring video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fidQZJAEPrs.

The Hilton Madison will share stories and images from the Carbone Ribbon Room project on Pinterest and Facebook, in addition to its website: www.hiltonmadison.com/ribbonroom.

“We are excited about the Hilton Madison’s new initiative to raise awareness for the UW Carbone Cancer Center, while also supporting our patients,” said Janie Winston, UW Carbone Cancer Center outreach specialist.  “This is another excellent example of a local business making a difference in the future of cancer research on a local, regional, and national level, and we are most appreciative.”

The Carbone Ribbon Room originated from the initiative of a team of Hilton Madison associates.  Andrea Mace, regional sales manager for Marcus Hotels & Resorts, is an active member of the UWCCC Emerging Leaders Board (ELB), and the Carbone Ribbon Room concept was conceived through Andrea’s devoted involvement with the UWCCC.  Andrea has been the driving force behind the project from the beginning and has been involved in every detail.  The impact of cancer on Andrea’s family, like so many others, brings a level of honor and dedication to this important project.

“Cancer touches many, and we all have a story to tell.  By partnering with UWCCC on the Carbone Ribbon Room, we hope to generate awareness and inspire others to take a creative approach to community involvement,” said Mace.  “The UW Carbone Cancer Center is recognized as one of the nation’s leading innovators in cancer research, and we’re fortunate that it’s right here in Madison.  This room enables the Hilton Madison to connect with the local community, encourage survivors and family members affected by cancer to share their stories, and to help fund essential research.”

“As a hotel, our job is to provide excellent hospitality and to make guests feel welcome and relaxed during their stay with us.  Our associates banded together to take our mission one step further by generating awareness and support of this important cause.  I am very proud of our entire staff here at the hotel,” said Ranette Maurer, director of sales and marketing for the Hilton Madison.

Kyra Popp, sales manager at the Hilton Madison added: “The Carbone Ribbon Room is an ideal way to leverage the resources we have at the Hilton Madison to make a difference and be a part of something bigger than yourself.  I have personally been touched by many people that have had cancer, and fortunately with the medical advances made in detection and treatment, many have overcome their battle.  With funds going directly towards UWCCC, the creation of the Carbone Ribbon Room will aid in further advancement towards curing and preventing all types of cancer.”

Chris Kessler, controller for the Hilton Madison, recently lost his sister, Kellie to cancer, and shares his thoughts about why the Carbone Ribbon Room is so important.  “Kellie always reminded me how important it is to have a positive attitude when fighting this battle and the Carbone Ribbon Room is an excellent way to show that to the community.  Kellie was involved with the Hilton Madison for over 10 years and the Hilton Madison has become a second family to both of us.  The creation of this room will not only bring attention to this horrible disease that affects families everywhere, but, in a small way, also help to keep Kellie’s spirit alive.”

Giving back to the community is not something new to Marcus Hotels & Resorts.  In 2010 the Pink Room launched at its InterContinental Milwaukee property to benefit Milwaukee’s After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD) foundation.  As of December 2013, $30,650 has been donated to ABCD as a result of the Pink Room Project.

North Hollywood Boutique Hotel, The Garland, to Debut Summer 2014

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (November 19, 2013) – Next summer, a long-standing and beloved icon of the valley, The Beverly Garland, will make its debut as North Hollywood’s newest boutique hotel, The Garland. This will take place after the completion of a $20 million dollar, multi-phase redesign and renovation that began this month. In addition, the property will shed the Holiday Inn flag November 30, 2013. Marcus Hotels & Resorts will continue to manage the property.

The original design of The Beverly Garland was heavily influenced by and named for actress Beverly Garland by her husband, Fillmore Crank. The real estate developer and contractor by trade partnered with the founder of the famed Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, John Kell Houssels, Jr., to build the hotel in 1970.  Second generation James Crank took over the helm in 1999. This winter, Mr. Crank is investing in the hotel with a complete redesign, taking all that is relaxing and fun about the Southern California experience and merging it with newly re-imagined style and comfort befitting today’s discerning traveler.

“It’s been a dream of mine to turn this beautiful property into a unique boutique hotel,” said Owner James Crank. “Our focus on service and the guest experience coupled with our determination to create an alternative hotel offering in Los Angeles will surely surpass expectations.”

Spearheading the renovation is General Manager Scott A. Mills who holds more than 20 years’ experience in the hospitality industry. From directing food and beverage concepts to managing operations and guest experiences, Mills has successfully taken ownership of all business components of the hospitality industry. His background with luxury properties, including multiple Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and the Viceroy Hotel Group, is a welcomed addition to the hotel, transforming one of Hollywood’s favorite properties to a unique, one-of-a-kind urban retreat.

“We are beyond thrilled for the next chapter of this revered Los Angeles hotel,” said General Manager Scott Mills. “The history of the property, combined with the plans we have in store, will bring the hotel to the next level. We’re excited to debut The Garland next summer.”

The renovation plans will incorporate bold, vibrant colors against rich textures and eclectic accent pieces. The re-designed property will mirror a sophisticated, retro-cool California style and experience. Designed by Forchielli Glynn, known for their work with hotel properties such as Miraval Resort and the Peninsula Beverly Hills, and Rossi Architecture, who designed the remodel of the Riviera Palm Springs. The hotel’s renovation will include transformation of all 242 guest rooms and 14 suites and public spaces, including the addition of a new, luscious outdoor garden space, unique to the area and perfect for weddings, social events.

In addition, the hotel’s signature restaurant, currently named “Tula’s Café” after Beverly Garland’s granddaughter, will be redesigned to unveil a brand new concept and welcoming outdoor patio. Executive Chef Warren Schwartz will be opening his new restaurant in the space, bringing with him an impressive resume and recent success of a Los Angeles favorite – Westside Tavern. During the renovation, Chef Schwartz will head “Warren’s Blackboard,” an interim restaurant serving as his “blackboard” to concept the property’s new dining venue. The experimental setting will feature a daily menu reflective of the culturally diverse Los Angeles food culture. Warren’s Blackboard will be an opportunity for both Chef Schwartz and diners to sculpt the experience guests will have at the property’s signature restaurant next year.

The Beverly Garland is just minutes away from many of Hollywood’s most popular destinations, including Universal Studios, Universal CityWalk, Hollywood and the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Warner Bros Studios.
