Skirvin Receives Hilton Excellence Award 2012

SKIRVIN HILTON RECEIVES TOP HILTON HOTELS AWARD

Oklahoma’s oldest hotel receives exclusive distinction as one of the top hotels

 in the Americas

Oklahoma City, OK, April 15, 2013…..The Skirvin Hilton Hotel again finds itself at the top of the Hilton Hotels rankings, this time as a recipient of the Hilton Brand Award of Excellence for 2012. The award is from Hilton Hotels and Resorts and is only given to 10 Hilton properties in the combined North and South Americas.  The Skirvin Hilton is majority-owned and operated by Marcus Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with Skirvin Partners in Development.

“This is the culmination of the hard work and dedication that our team strives for each day, ” said Skirvin Hilton General Manager Martin van der Laan. “The Hilton family boasts one of the most impressive portfolios of properties in the world, and to be recognized in such an exclusive group as one of the best is truly an honor.”

The Skirvin also received its highest quality assurance scores in the semi-annual Hilton Quality Assurance Inspection since re-opening the hotel in 2007. To assess quality assurance at each Hilton property, the internal quality assurance consultant for Hilton evaluates each property throughout the year. Every area of the hotel is inspected and graded, including guest rooms, public areas and back-of-house areas.

“We are extremely proud of our high quality assurance scores,” continued van der Laan. “Receiving the highest scores since our re-opening is a ringing endorsement for the hotel staff and a testament to their unwavering commitment to delivering a first-class experience to our valued guests.”

About The Skirvin Hilton Hotel

The Skirvin Hilton originally opened in 1911 and has been synonymous with elegance and innovation ever since, hosting oil barons, dignitaries, movie stars, political leaders, presidents and guests from around the globe. In 2007, Skirvin Partners in Development, Marcus Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Worldwide partnered on restoring the hotel to its original glory.  The reopening event was designated as an official Oklahoma Centennial event.  Since the renovation, the hotel has earned a AAA Four Diamond rating every year and also received the Mayor’s Development Award for best downtown development.

The hotel features 225 luxuriously appointed guest rooms, including 20 one-bedroom suites, one presidential suite and 18,500 square feet of premiere meeting and pre-function space. It is home to the upscale Park Avenue Grill restaurant and Red Piano lounge.

Last year, the Skirvin was named one of the best hotel meeting destinations and received a prestigious Pinnacle Award from Successful Meetings. The hotel was also once again recognized as one of the 2012 Best Hotels in the USA by U.S. News & World Report, finishing as the #1 Hotel in Oklahoma City and the State of Oklahoma.  The hotel remains on the National Register of Historic Places.

NASDAQ, Walmart Offer a Dose of Reality on Green Business

[box type=”info”]Original article by Mike Bellamente for the Huffington Post [/box]

If you’re an optimist about the state of green business, don’t read this.

Shit. You’re still here.

To put it bluntly: it’s not working. That’s the rose-colored takeaway of last week’s GreenBiz Forum in New York City.

We’ve succeeded in building an entire industry of sustainability professionals, individually doing yeoman’s work to further the cause, but collectively falling short in how we validate our work beyond our bubble. When Sandy Frucher, Vice Chairman of NASDAQ, says that adopting sustainability reporting standards by the world’s stock exchanges is the “right thing to do,” it insinuates that such practices don’t lead to higher returns. Mr. Frucher admits as much when he notes that, until one investment analyst poses a single question about a company’s sustainability performance, we should be content with relying on corporate goodwill as a driver of sustainability — not because operating sustainably mitigates risk, but because of the warm fuzziness of taking the moral high road.

When Jeff Rice, Senior Director of Sustainability at Walmart, confesses that consumer response to their progressive environmental strategy is virtually non-existent, the reality becomes clear that, more than 10 years into the modern sustainability movement, we are pedaling uphill, against the wind.

To echo the thoughts of another conference goer, “We’re all getting really good at operationalizing sustainability and filling out surveys, but at the end of the day, we’re just a small universe, talking amongst ourselves.” What really drove this home is when, upon my return to the office, I discovered a flyer for the upcoming FUSE event in Chicago on brand strategy and packaging. The word ‘sustainability’ appeared not once on the agenda. In fact, I would bet my mule that sustainability doesn’t even get uttered at FUSE.

So, where do we go from here? To borrow from Timothy Westbrook, the quirky, undeniably talented low-impact artist-in-resident at the posh Pfister Hotel, we need to turn our paradigm on its head. More so than looking at a Coke can and seeing a pair of aluminum shoes, we need to blow up our tidy little world of “green bizzers” and explore more effective ways of becoming inclusive of the everyday Joe. Joe Marketer, Joe Consumer, Joe Investor, Joe the Plumber… all the Joes and all their female, inter-racial, socially-conservative, LGBT counterparts.

To start, we need to take Amy Hartzler’s advice from Free Range Studios and become sustainability “mythmakers.” If we’re spending millions of the company’s money on low-carbon energy solutions, we need to be a hell of a lot better at framing it with a compelling story, replete with sexy men and women, little puppies and all the other surefire ways of getting people’s attention. It needs to go beyond the enterprise, down to the brand and product level. And, as much as we enjoy seeing our initiatives represented in the traditional CSR media outlets, these things need to be Super Bowl ad-worthy.

During their sneak preview of the latest Ernst & Young/GreenBiz Group survey results on sustainability risk management, Brendan LeBlanc and his band of EY consulting dudes contended that the increasing materiality of resource scarcity and extreme weather is steadily growing the demand for environmental risk management, which, in turn, is driving the inclusion of the CFO as a stakeholder in the sustainability discussion. This is good because it helps to sell upper management on the business case for the next solar project, but it does little to get consumers to join us as a dance partner in saving the world.

Outside the fraction of light and dark green consumers who shop on eco-values, the rest of society still shops on price, quality, fashion, taste, etc. Understanding this to be true, it’s time we up our game, pool our resources and begin telling people the story of not just how green we are, but what’s in it for the consumer, what they should do about it (see Amy Hartzler’s piece on empowerment marketing).

It can be argued that a corporate sustainability program will only go as far as its meager budget allows. How can we be asked to change how consumers behave and investors invest? Compared to the folks in marketing, the annual corporate spend on sustainability is a mere drop in the bucket. But as someone so wisely quoted of David Mitchell at the forum, “What is an ocean, but a multitude of drops?”

Mike Bellamente is the director of Climate Counts, a consumer outreach organization that rates corporations on how well they measure, reduce and report their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In February 2012, Bellamente was named to Ethisphere’s 2011 list of 100 most influential people in business ethics.

The Grand Geneva Resort & Spa Celebrates 45 Years of Memories

THE GRAND GENEVA RESORT & SPA CELEBRATES 45 YEARS OF MEMORIES

Yearlong activities to include specialty pricing, retro-themed events, and more

(Lake Geneva, WI; March 11, 2013)— The AAA Four Diamond Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, announces a yearlong celebration of the property’s 45th anniversary. Throughout 2013, guests of Grand Geneva can look forward to special promotions and happenings, including specialty room rates, era-honoring events, and a gallery retrospective of the resort’s history. In addition, the resort will be publishing an illustrated, commemorative coffee table book on the property’s rich history, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the United Way of Walworth County.

 A Bunny Tale

Originally opened in 1968 as the Lake Geneva Playboy Club Hotel, the lush property served as a luxury escape for Midwest travelers. The first Playboy Club Hotel to open in the U.S., the resort brought a touch of glamour to the small lakeside community. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Lake Geneva government officials and local dignitaries joined Hugh Hefner in celebrating the resort’s grand opening.

The Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired hotel featured opulent design elements including an indoor swimming pool complete with a connecting passage to the outdoor pool area, two championship golf courses, and a ski lounge designed in the shape of two interlocking snowflakes. Travelers from Chicago were able to fly directly to the resort, via the private airstrip that offered commuter service from the city’s O’Hare airport. Upon arrival, guests were transported around the resort on the hotel’s “Bunny Tram.”

With the property’s grand opening on May 6, 1968, the quiet lakeside community gained a few new residents – a bevy of lovely Playboy Bunnies, outfitted with the signature corsets, puffy tails, and bunny ears. In addition, the hotel and its cabaret stage attracted some of the era’s most famous acts including Bob Hope, Sonny and Cher, and Bill Cosby.

After a stint as the Americana Hotel from 1982 to 1993, the Milwaukee-based Marcus Corporation purchased the property, reviving it as the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, a year-round vacation destination. The property underwent a complete renovation, with updates to the hotel’s 355 guest rooms, golf courses, and property grounds. Other new additions included the introduction of a Scandinavian day spa – the WELL Spa— and an outdoor fireplace lounge.

Celebrating 45 Years and Beyond

Beginning this month, the Grand Geneva will unveil a variety of promotions to celebrate this historic milestone. Throughout 2013, a series of initiatives will be unveiled, a selection of which include:

  • On-going work with local historians and residents to build a collection of memorabilia for display in the hotel
  • Specialty room rates offered throughout the year
  • “Throwback” pricing on select activities throughout the year, reflecting the 1968 prices from when the property first opened
  • Era-themed concerts throughout the summer, with cover bands playing music tributes to the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s as a part of the resort’s annual Summer Concert Series
  • A fall soirée to cap off the year of events

Online followers can track the resort’s 45years of memories on the Grand Geneva’s Facebook and Twitter pages, which will be unveiling contests and sweepstakes throughout the year. Fans are encouraged to share their own memories and memorabilia by contacting socialmedia@grandgeneva.com.

Hotel Phillips Names Kevin Deen Next Artist in Residence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Feb. 22, 2013) — Continuing its tradition of supporting the Kansas City arts community, the Hotel Phillips, which is owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, has chosen Kevin Deen, an architectural painter, as its second Artist in Residence. Deen will work in the Hotel Phillips’ new studio space beginning this month and will remain at the hotel for one year.

“We are pleased to welcome our second Artist in Residence to the Hotel Phillips.  This year, we have added a working art studio and gallery in the hotel where guests and visitors can view Kevin’s architectural portraits and watch him as he paints.  The expansion of the artist-in-residence program demonstrates our commitment to the Kansas City arts community and we look forward to introducing Kevin and his work to our guests,” said Dan Bergmann, general manager.

An Iowa native, Deen’s inspirations originated from his days of living in the heartland of the Midwest, surrounded by many farm communities.  Big-blue skies and bright-red barns made an early impression on him, and his first architectural painting was of a barn on his uncle’s Iowa farm.  After graduating from Iowa State University in design, he moved to Kansas City, where he taught art at a local high school. In 1987 he moved to San Diego, but it was a visit back to Iowa during that time when he again became enamored with the simple architectural beauty of farms.  Deen’s first one-man show featuring his graphic/impressionist style took place in San Diego in 1990, and he’s actively developed and sold his work since. His use of bright, uplifting colors to create crisp dimension seem to breathe an inner glow from the buildings he paints and gives them an iconic and joyous feeling.

“I am honored to be selected as the Hotel Phillips’ next Artist in Residence.  My first piece at the hotel will be a painting of the Kauffman Performing Arts Center.  I’m excited to watch my paintings evolve under the inspiration of the local arts community and hotel visitors,” states Deen.

The Hotel Phillips’ first artist, Trey Bryan, sketched in various locations throughout the hotel, capturing all the excitement and activity surrounding him.

Marcus Hotels & Resorts first launched the Artist-in-Residence program in 2009 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, Wis. to support local talented artists and to generate awareness of the arts community.  The excellent guest response led to the expansion of the program to the company’s Skirvin Hilton in Oklahoma City, Okla. and in 2012 to the Hotel Phillips.  Guests can interact with the artists at each property and witness the evolution of their pieces firsthand.  Every year each hotel selects a new artist from a variety of applicants.

apart.  We strive to provide our guests with superior service, and it’s due to the exceptional efforts of our associates that we have achieved these high-level national recognitions.”

To create this year’s rankings, U.S. News factored in the prominence of industry awards a hotel receives along with its reputation among travel experts and guests. In total, 1,639 U.S. luxury hotels

and 273 Caribbean hotels were analyzed for the 2013 rankings. Only a fraction of these scored high enough to be named Best Hotels by U.S. News.

“This is our third year ranking hotels, and the bar continues to climb for luxury properties,” said Chad Smolinski, vice president of rankings and reviews at U.S. News & World Report. “Desirable amenities and hotel loyalty programs will no longer suffice. People are seeking hotels that go above and beyond to give their guests an unforgettable experience. Hotels that consistently meet the high expectations of experts and travelers are recognized in our rankings.”
