MILWAUKEE – May 23, 2019 – The historic AAA Four-Diamond Pfister® Hotel, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, today announced Bela Suresh Roongta, founder and owner of Milwaukee-based boutique shop, belabela, as its 12th Pfister Narrator in Residence. An artist and writer inspired by her East Indian roots, Suresh Roongta will bring a new series, called “Chai at The Pfister,” as well as henna, journaling workshops and more to her year-long residency as The Pfister Narrator. During the residency, she will also share her experiences at the hotel and interactions with guests via The Pfister’s award-winning blog (blog.thepfisterhotel.com).

“As an immigrant, travel lover, business owner, lawyer-turned-artist and storyteller, I identify with The Pfister’s history as a hotel built by immigrants living the American Dream,” said Roongta. “I believe strongly in the power of human connection and am guided by my conviction that it is in each other’s stories that we find the beauty of the human spirit. I can think of no better way to continue this work than to capture and share the stories of The Pfister Hotel’s guests and visitors.”

During her residency, Roongta will host a bi-monthly “Chai at The Pfister” series, the first of which will be May 28, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. These events will encourage guests and locals, alike, to enjoy a cup of chai and pause for a moment to sit, rest and share stories. Every other week she will also apply henna in the lobby, as well as journaling workshops and henna classes for those interested in learning more about this Ancient East Indian art form.

Roongta, who is based in Milwaukee, is a published author and has been recognized extensively for her literary and arts work. She was the 2018-2019 Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN) spoken word mentee, and in 2016, she received a Special Recognition Governor’s Trailblazer Award for Women in Business for innovation and success. Her book ‘…fill in the beauty, a book for the storyteller and artist in all of us,’ captures original drawings and stories that invite readers to read, draw and reflect.

Prior to focusing on storytelling and art, Roongta was the director of courthouse advocacy for the Task Force on Family Violence, now the Sojourner Family Peace Center. She also served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, the Tamarack Waldorf School and DIDI, a community organization that provides culturally specific advocacy for victims of family violence. She continues to use this expertise as a volunteer attorney at the Milwaukee Justice Center. She received her juris doctorate from the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City, Iowa, as well as a bachelor’s degree in sociology and philosophy from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

The Pfister Narrator is selected each year from a pool of applicants by a review panel consisting of local writers, editors and hotel representatives. Suresh Roongta succeeds Anna Lardinois, who served as the 11th Pfister Narrator.

Hotel to feature all-day neighborhood café/restaurant, specialty pizza joint, welcoming lobby bar and city’s only champagne bar

Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel, Milwaukee’s first-of-its kind independent arts hotel, unveiled today its new culinary and bar experiences: Aria Café & Bar, Proof Pizza, the Bar at Saint Kate and Giggly Champagne & Wine Bar. By sourcing the best quality and freshest ingredients from near and far, Saint Kate’s dining experiences will engage, connect and inspire locals and visitors alike as they discover something new, or simply enjoy a classic favorite. Whether to nosh, nourish or explore, dining and drinking at Saint Kate will be simply fresh, exciting and delicious.

Serving as the guiding and creative force of the dining and bar experiences will be Food and Beverage Director Brent Hockenberry, who will oversee food and beverage across the hotel, and Executive Chef Aaron Miles, who will lead the hotel’s culinary team. Both Hockenberry and Miles previously served as executive chefs at top hotels across the country, creating menus that challenged perspectives and created fresh culinary moments.

“Just as art is subjective, so is each person’s individual culinary journey,” said Hockenberry. “Our menus will use only the finest, best-in-market ingredients, allowing guests and locals to have fun discovering, creating and tasting new foods, flavors and smells. We believe in the simple things: allowing our guests to enjoy attentive service, great drinks and delicious food. But we also believe in taking risks and pushing beyond the familiar for those willing to leave their comfort zone for a bit. There will be something to inspire every palate at Saint Kate.”

Drink and Dine at Saint Kate

Aria Café & Bar
The heart of Saint Kate’s food and beverage is “Aria Café & Bar.” The all-day neighborhood café and restaurant, located on the second floor of the hotel, will specialize in simple, classic American cuisine handcrafted from the freshest, seasonal ingredients. Whether enjoying blueberry granola pancakes or house made corned beef hash in the morning, the return of the Milwaukee favorite Big Boy Burger for lunch, or sugar and spice crispy Amish chicken and shareable plates like charred Octopus with romesco for dinner, Aria will offer a friendly environment for socializing while noshing on humble, rebooted classics. The restaurant will also feature several select partnerships with local butchers, bakers, brewers and potters to celebrate art in all its forms. Just like the expressive melodies of an operatic aria, Aria Café & Bar will be a performance of sight, smells and flavors.

Proof Pizza
Located adjacent to Saint Kate on Water Street, “Proof Pizza” is Milwaukee’s newest neighborhood pizza joint – a pizzeria perfect for a quick lunch during a busy work day or a casual dinner before a performance. Inspired by the regional cuisine of southern Italy, Proof Pizza will be known for its specialty and build-your-own hand-made Neapolitan-style pizzas featuring 48-hour slow-rise dough and homemade tomato sauce, all cooked in under two minutes in a handcrafted 800-degree brick oven. Other menu items include Italian-style pocket sandwiches known as “tascas,” fresh seasonal salads, antipasti, playful desserts and other Italian classics reinterpreted with an artistic twist. Proof Pizza will also feature a simple and fun selection of imported and craft beers, as well as tasty wines.

the Bar
The focal point and primary gathering area at Saint Kate, “the Bar” will welcome artists of all stripes and walks of life to work and play around the clock. During the day, the Bar’s evocative collection of art and comfortable seating creates the neighborhood’s go to spot for work or casual pop-up meetings. Guests can be found sipping on locally roasted coffee, fresh squeezed all-natural juices and cocktails, or nibbling on house-made pastries. In the evening, the convivial space will transform into a vibrant, social spot, where guests and locals alike will mix, mingle and commune around the intimate bar while sipping cocktails made by expert craftsmen and experiencing pop-up sets from local DJs, performers and other artists. From the ice, juices and bitters made in-house, to “outside-of-the-glass” presentation, each hand-crafted cocktail will be created with the care and attention of an artist. The Bar will also feature draft cocktails with shareable drink options, nitro cold brew cocktails, local craft beers on tap, a crowd-sourced beer can art program, approachable wines, and a special focus on non-alcoholic drinks. Guests will be able to enjoy bites from the new “Proof Pizza” throughout the night. Also, for guests who prefer to enjoy a drink in the privacy of their room, the Bar will provide “Do it Yourself” cocktail room service.

Giggly Champagne & Wine Bar
Also found on the second floor of Saint Kate will be “Giggly Champagne & Wine Bar,” Milwaukee’s only champagne bar. A hidden gem overlooking Milwaukee’s theatre and entertainment district, Giggly (for short) will tickle the senses. Giggly will be the place to make every day a party – to “faire la fete.” A collection of champagne and international sparkling wines from the world’s finest vintners will be available by the glass and bottle, as well as a full selection of cocktails, beer and bar bites. An inviting wine list will take guests from sweet to dry and showcase different variations of sparkling wine, while the cocktails will highlight the fun you can have when pairing sparkling wine and spirits. You will be able to find some non-alcoholic fizzy lifting drinks and bubbly desserts, too!

At an unveiling event held November 12 in collaboration with Milwaukee’s vibrant creative community, over 400 artists witnessed the vision and story of Saint Kate unfold, and learned how they can be a part of the hotel’s dynamic creative process and experiential DNA. Artists were invited to use Saint Kate as a space to share their vision, passion and imagination with travelers and locals alike.

“Saint Kate is a place for everyone who treasures the arts and appreciates all that art can bring to our lives and communities. Like art in its most basic form, this hotel is fully inclusive and a home to experience the power of contrasts. Saint Kate will help show the world that Milwaukee is a vibrant destination for creative expression,” said Reginald Baylor, one of Wisconsin’s best-known artists and the first Artist in Residence of The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. “All our lives are made richer by letting go of the familiar and embracing the process of creativity. At Saint Kate, our community can unite to embrace the beauty of what could be.”

Like an artist’s blank canvas, the entire experiential destination will celebrate art in all its many forms, from music to dance, painting to sculpture, film to poetry and more. All ideas are welcome and encouraged. Located in the heart of Milwaukee’s theatre and entertainment district, the 219-room hotel will feature art-inspired guestrooms, 13,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, 11 event rooms and three restaurants, as well as bars and lounges. “We are in the business of asking what-if and why not? People like adventure and authentic experiences and the opportunity to step out of their day-to-day. Saint Kate will be full of surprises for those who crave an enriching travel experience – to engage and explore, rather than simply observe. Our number-one goal is to challenge people’s thinking about art and the creative process. By tapping into our creative community, we are using art as a tool to show that there is beauty in the process as well as the finished product. All can be celebrated at Saint Kate,” said hotel visionary Greg Marcus, president and CEO of The Marcus Corporation.

About The Pfister Hotel
Celebrating its 125th year, The Pfister Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the Midwest and continues to be the premier hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Originally opened in 1893 by businessman Guido Pfister, it was the most lavish hotel of its time. The hotel’s storied elegance had faded following World War II, until 1962, when Ben Marcus, founder of The Marcus Corporation, purchased this grand hotel out of bankruptcy. The Marcus Corporation renovated and restored the hotel to its original glory, adding convention facilities, a parking garage and 23-story guest tower. The Pfister Hotel remains home to the largest collection of Victorian art of any hotel in the world, and is home to an award-winning Artist in Residence program celebrating its 10th year.
Today The Pfister Hotel continues its tradition of gracious service and impeccable style, and has been recognized by AAA as a Four-Diamond property for 41 consecutive years. In 2017, The Pfister Hotel was ranked the No. 1 Best Milwaukee Hotel by U.S. News & World Report and was recognized as a Top Hotel in the Midwest in Condé Nast Traveler’s 30th annual Reader’s Choice Awards. This exceptional property is a member of two prestigious hotel organizations, Historic Hotels of America and Preferred Hotels & Resorts. The Pfister Hotel is located at 424 E. Wisconsin Ave. in downtown Milwaukee. For more information, please visit www.thepfisterhotel.com and follow the hotel on Facebook and Twitter (@PfisterHotel).
