The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel Honored with the Inaugural Innovation Stars of the Industry AwardLincoln, Neb., May 16, 2018. . . . . The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, announced today it has received the inaugural Innovation Stars of the Industry Award from the Nebraska Hotel and Lodging Association (NHLA). The property was recognized for its dedication to innovation through its various community-directed programs and initiatives, along with its role as a brand ambassador for the city of Lincoln, Neb. “We are beyond excited to be honored with the inaugural Innovation Stars of the Industry Award,” said Susan Madsen, general manager of The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. “This award is a true testament to the unwavering commitment of our associates to our guests and our local community. Our innovative programs not only create distinctive experiences for our guests, but they provide opportunities for our guests to tap into our local culture so they can embrace all our beautiful city has to offer. Congratulations to our entire team on this significant recognition.” Since Marcus Hotels & Resorts became the majority owner and manager of the hotel in 2012, The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker has implemented numerous programs designed to support various community initiatives and has inspired other Lincoln hotels to participate in its efforts. These programs include creating the hotel’s successful Artist-in-Residence program that recognizes local artists, adopting a highway with other local Marriott hotels to beautify the city, raising money for local charities as part of its Battle of the Bartenders celebrity events held in Miller Time Pub & Grill, and hosting Project SEARCH, which provides on-site classroom accommodations and real-life work experiences for youth with developmental disabilities. The hotel also started an innovative program last year in which the hotel became home to over 80,000 honeybees. Influenced by the hotel’s former Artist-in-Residence, Margaret Berry, who created paintings using resin, pigment and beeswax, the hotel began raising honeybees on its roof to generate awareness of the decline in honeybees over the years, while also using the honey for delicious menu items and honey-inspired beer. The honey, called Bee Our Guest, is also available for purchase in the hotel’s gift shop. Additionally, The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel also hosts numerous fundraisers and community events throughout the year such as its Tree Illuminating and Holiday Market event, to raise money for local charities, including United Way, Food Bank of Heartland, Strike Out Hunger and many others. The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel was honored with the inaugural Innovation Stars of the Industry Award at a special ceremony at the property on May 7, 2018. The Innovation Stars of the Industry Award winner is selected by members of NHLA and awarded to the hotel that creates innovative ways to provide the best guest experience by establishing unique and personalized moments. “The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel fosters visionary thinking and innovation. It’s not only a truly remarkable hotel but a host to local artists, a habitat to thousands of honeybees in which the honey is put to use in a variety of ways and a safe place where youths with developmental disabilities can learn so they can have a successful future. When we looked at the hotels that are making a difference in their community, The Cornhusker shined above the rest,” said Kristina Phalen, president of the Nebraska Hotel and Lodging Association. Local Walking Tour Owner Named Next Pfister Hotel Narrator-in-ResidenceAnna Lardinois to Start New Pfister Hotel Walking Tours and Podcast The historic AAA Four-Diamond Pfister® Hotel, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, today announced Anna Lardinois, owner of Walking Milwaukee self-guided walking tours, as its 11th Pfister Narrator-in-Residence. With a deep-seeded appreciation and passion for Milwaukee’s history, Lardinois will share her experiences at the hotel and interactions with guests via The Pfister’s award-winning blog (blog.thepfisterhotel.com) and ongoing literary events. New this year, Lardinois also plans to begin quarterly walking tours and podcasts about The Pfister Hotel. “The Pfister Narrator program is a natural fit. I have long admired Milwaukee’s history and downtown’s gorgeous architecture. To have the opportunity to share stories from one of our city’s premier, iconic downtown hotels will be an invaluable experience,” said Lardinois. “I have spent years helping to bring the city to life through my work with Milwaukee walking tours. I cannot wait to do the same for The Pfister.” A Pewaukee native, Lardinois began her literary career as a high school English teacher for the School District of Waukesha. She taught at Waukesha West High School and IQ Academies of Wisconsin for 12 years. In 2012, while still teaching, she created Milwaukee’s popular Gothic Milwaukee walking tour, which showcases premier historic sites around the city. Three years later, Lardinois’ love of Milwaukee’s history and architecture led her to found Walking Milwaukee, a collection of self-guided walking tours of the city. She quickly made walking tours her full-time career and has since created a GPS-based, self-guided walking tour of Wisconsin Avenue to complement her other tours. Since starting Gothic Milwaukee and Walking Milwaukee, Lardinois has helped introduce Milwaukee’s history to thousands of visiting tourists. Her Gothic Milwaukee tour was named “Best Milwaukee Tour” by the Shepherd Express in its 2017 “Best of Milwaukee” list. “Undoubtedly, Anna will be bringing one of the most unique approaches to The Pfister Narrator program, and we are thrilled to have her. Her depth of knowledge and clear passion for the history of Milwaukee matches incredibly well with The Pfister Hotel and its 125 years of serving locals and visitors alike,” said Tim Smith, general manager of The Pfister Hotel. “Whether it is through her new walking tours and podcast, regular blog posts, or any other number of literary events at the hotel, Anna will truly bring The Pfister and its many stories to life.” The Pfister Narrator is selected each year from a pool of applicants by a review panel consisting of local writers, editors and hotel representatives. Lardinois was named the 11th Pfister Narrator based on her extensive storytelling career and her existing popularity in Milwaukee’s hospitality and tourism industries. Lardinois succeeds Nicole Mattke, who served as the 10th Pfister Narrator. Milwaukee ChopHouse Announces New Chef de Cuisine and MenuThe Milwaukee ChopHouse, part of Marcus Restaurant Group, announced today that Calum Hastreiter has been promoted from culinary supervisor to chef de cuisine. In his new role, Hastreiter will oversee daily operations of the Milwaukee ChopHouse, located at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center in downtown Milwaukee. The restaurant also announced today that it has launched a new dinner menu, Hastreiter’s first as chef of the Milwaukee ChopHouse. Hastreiter takes on his new position as chef de cuisine following six years working in various roles at the Milwaukee ChopHouse and Miller Time Pub & Grill, also located at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. Prior to joining Marcus Restaurant Group, Hastreiter worked at Stonefly Brewery, a brewpub formerly located in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood. He served in several roles during his time with the brewpub, moving his way up the ranks to become kitchen manager in 2010. A Manitowoc, Wisconsin native, Hastreiter received a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “During the past six years working at the Milwaukee ChopHouse and Miller Time Pub & Grill, I have been able to develop my culinary voice. I have had the great opportunity to build creative menus using seasonal and local ingredients for our regular wine dinners and learn about the restaurant’s classic dishes,” said Hastreiter. “Now, as chef de cuisine at the restaurant, I’m excited to showcase dishes and ingredients that I think represent me best as a chef and that our guests will thoroughly enjoy.” In early March, Chef Haistreiter introduced his first dinner menu for the Milwaukee ChopHouse. The new menu features prime cuts, classic to the Milwaukee ChopHouse, in addition to an increased focus on seafood offerings. Two dishes of special note, as well as a few thoughts from Chef Hastreiter, include:
Over the past year, the Milwaukee ChopHouse has worked to create a dining experience outside the expectations of a traditional chophouse. The restaurant received its first Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2017, which recognized its more than 150 wines available to guests. The restaurant also began hosting regular wine dinners featuring several courses of specially-prepared dishes paired with select wines from top vineyards and wineries across the United States, and unveiled seasonal menus featuring trendy cuts of meat, such as the bistro filet and braised pork cheek. The most recent and sold-out wine dinner, held March 9, featured exclusive selections from northern California-based Michael David Winery. While trying five wines from this 150-year-old winery, guests enjoyed five courses, which included: To learn more about upcoming wine dinners, menu changes, specialty dishes and the Milwaukee ChopHouse in general, visit http://www.chophouse411.com/chophouse_location_MCH.asp, or find Milwaukee ChopHouse on Facebook and Twitter. The Pfister® Hotel Names Stephanie Schultz as Next Artist in ResidenceThe historic AAA Four Diamond Pfister® Hotel, owned and managed by Marcus® Hotels & Resorts, today announced Stephanie Schultz has been selected as the hotel’s next Artist in Residence. As the program celebrates its 10th anniversary, Schultz, a Milwaukee-area fashion designer, will work in the hotel’s lobby-level Artist’s Studio for one year beginning April 1, 2018. She is succeeding current Pfister Artist in Residence and tintype photographer, Margaret Muza. “I am thrilled to be the next Artist in Residence as The Pfister celebrates the program’s 10th anniversary. It will be an honor to share my enthusiasm for fashion design with a community that I love,” said Schultz. “What I value above all else is learning through experience, and my time in this residency will certainly teach me a lot. I tell stories with my garments, specializing in historically-inspired couture, and what I learn through my emotions and inspiration is channeled into the fabric. As The Pfister Hotel’s next Artist in Residence, I cannot wait to use this opportunity to share my work with a broader audience and create truly unique pieces inspired by the 125-year history of this iconic hotel.” Schultz’s work is often inspired by antique art and architecture, making The Pfister Hotel a perfect fit for her next collection. As an artist, she is no stranger to exploring new styles and designs. Her work has transitioned from counter-culture streetwear to couture and avant-garde. In 2005, Schultz began her fashion label, Silversark, as a way to bring Japanese street fashion to a Western audience. Recently, she has experimented with fashion elements from the Tudor-era through the Roaring ’20s, and translated them into contemporary designs. Through her passion and dedication for fashion design, Schultz has unveiled a number of different lines and collections under Silversark. As part of her residency and as an homage to The Pfister Hotel’s invaluable Victorian art collection, Schultz will spend her yearlong residency designing a 16- to 20-piece fashion line inspired by the subjects in the hotel’s expansive art collection. This will include photographing, compositing and printing replicas of select hotel paintings on fabric to create one-of-a-kind wearable art. Her residency will culminate in a fashion show, presenting the full collection in The Pfister Hotel’s Imperial Ballroom. The final piece of her collection will serve as a Legacy Piece for the hotel, which will go on permanent display in the property. “The Pfister Hotel has always been a strong advocate for the arts, celebrating the works of painters, photographers, designers and more throughout its history. We are proud to celebrate our local artists and their incredible work as we commemorate The Pfister Hotel’s 125 years of prestige and commitment to Milwaukee, as well as this significant milestone for the Pfister’s Artist-in-Residence program,” said Tim Smith, general manager of The Pfister Hotel. “It’s an exciting time to welcome Stephanie to The Pfister Hotel and we cannot wait to see what she creates in the studio.” Schultz was one of six finalists included in a four-week public voting period. In addition to the public vote via Facebook and in-person ballots, a selection committee, consisting of leaders in the local arts community, made the final decision in choosing the next Artist in Residence. For the third time in the history of the Artist-in-Residence program, Schultz was also selected as the winner of the public vote. The public vote winner typically receives the opportunity to display his or her work in a solo exhibit at Gallerie M inside the InterContinental Milwaukee, also owned and managed by Marcus Hotels & Resorts. Because Schultz was also selected as the winner of the public vote, the public vote runner-up, Alice Wilson, a local living statue performer and costume artist, will receive the honor to showcase her work at Gallerie M this year. Both artists will receive a $300 gift certificate to Utrecht Art Supply, located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward. All finalists from this year and years past will be offered additional opportunities to show their work at future Pfister-sponsored events. For more information on the latest news and updates from Marcus Hotels & Resorts, please visit: https://media.marcushotels.com. About The Pfister’s Artist-in-Residence Program Entering its tenth year, The Pfister’s Artist-in-Residence program features a working art studio and gallery that is open to hotel guests and visitors. The program encourages the public to interact with the artist and witness the evolution of each piece first-hand. Over the years, The Pfister has received national attention for its Artist-in-Residence program. Since 2009, the hotel has been a member of the Alliance of Artist Communities, www.artistcommunities.org, an international association of artists’ communities and residencies featuring a diverse field of more than 1,000 programs worldwide. Additionally, The Pfister’s program has inspired similar residencies at two other Marcus Hotels & Resorts properties: The Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City and the Lincoln Marriot Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Neb. About The Pfister Hotel Celebrating its 125th year, The Pfister Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the Midwest and continues to be the premier hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Originally opened in 1893 by businessman Guido Pfister, it was the most lavish hotel of its time. The hotel’s storied elegance had faded following World War II, until 1962, when Ben Marcus, founder of The Marcus Corporation, purchased this grand hotel out of bankruptcy. The Marcus family renovated and restored the hotel to its original glory, adding convention facilities, a parking garage and 23-story guest tower. The Pfister Hotel remains home to the largest collection of Victorian art of any hotel in the world, and offers an interactive augmented reality tour of pieces in this impressive collection. Today The Pfister Hotel continues its tradition of gracious service and impeccable style, and has been recognized by AAA as a Four-Diamond property for 41 consecutive years. In 2017, The Pfister Hotel was ranked the No. 1 Best Milwaukee Hotel by U.S. News & World Report and was recognized as a Top Hotel in the Midwest in Condé Nast Traveler’s 30th annual Reader’s Choice Awards. Control Assigns New Secret Agents to SafeHouse MilwaukeeControl, the clandestine organization tasked with establishing and maintaining SafeHouse Restaurants in Milwaukee and Chicago, announced today that it has assigned two new agents to SafeHouse Milwaukee. Agent Change, a.k.a. Nick Dillon, joins the restaurant as the new Chief of Staff (general manager), and Agent Bacon, a.k.a. Craig Larson, was named the new Chief Culinary Agent (kitchen manager). Collectively, Agents Change and Bacon will manage all aspects of SafeHouse Milwaukee. Agent Change Before going undercover at The SafeHouse, Agent Change was stationed at the Milwaukee Burger Company in Franklin, Wisconsin. He has also worked as general manager of the oldest Mexican restaurant in continuous operation by the same family in the U.S. – El Charro Café – located in Tucson, Arizona. He is originally from Burlington, Wisconsin and currently resides in Glendale, Wisconsin with his wife Sarah and their three children Liam, Harrison and Penelope. Agent Bacon “Agents Change and Bacon join a team of highly-trained sleuths at SafeHouse Milwaukee. With their talents for building original and successful restaurant programs, as well as creating exceptional culinary experiences, they fit right in,” whispered Agent Blonde, a.k.a. Peggy Williams-Smith, senior vice president of SafeHouse Restaurants. “SafeHouse Milwaukee is an iconic landmark in our city. These two agents bring the necessary skills and cunning expertise needed to keep the tradition alive for many years to come. We’re thrilled they agreed to help us carry out our mission.” Since first opening in 1966, SafeHouse Milwaukee has operated under the alias International Exports Ltd. and has become the premier refuge for the world’s undercover elite. In February 2017, Control welcomed a second SafeHouse location in downtown Chicago. Today, agents visiting either city can rest easy knowing that they have a SafeHouse waiting.
